My God, she got there fast. With one proper (read Major Label) single release to her name and a spectacularly healthy chart position achieved, Elly Jackson aka La Roux could be forgiven for thinking that she's already reached the heady heights of superstardom. Headlining the countrywide NME Radar tour alongside Magistrates, Heartbreak and The Chapman Family, there's no doubt who the heavily made up, angular coiffured hordes are here to see.
She seems to be everywhere now, blaring from the radio and TV, fitting perfectly into the burgeoning new female electro scene that those marketing folks and their journalist buddies are focussing so hard on pushing to the public. And it's probably fair to say that, right now, she's top of the pile, clambering over the likes of Little Boots and Ladyhawke to emerge triumphant. It's a lot to live up to, and tonight could well be an indication of how well things are going to turn out.
Sadly, as per usual, Flashlight's travelling arrangements left something to be desired and we walked in to the venue to the dying strains of Magistrates, having missed the Chapman Family and Heartbreak. It's pretty hard to judge, but those dying strains weren't terribly exciting - in the spirit of giving them the benefit of the doubt, we'll move on quickly.
As La Roux takes to the stage in a heaving Koko, backed with her two synth toting accomplices, she looks like a mighty small presence on a pretty big stage. However, any fears of being overawed by either the occasion or the venue are quickly allayed with a storming version of debut single, 'Quicksand', released on the Kitsune label towards the end of last year (before the heavy hitters of Polydor came along to make her a star). With the crowd firmly onside, she races through a brief but hugely entertaining electro-disco set keeping the punters happy with minimal banter and a voice that fills the old theatre and then some.
As expected, the biggest cheers of the night are reserved for 'In For The Kill', which recently only narrowly missed nabbing her a first Number One single, but in truth, there's not really a bad song on offer. It's basically a pick-a-hit parade with every track sounding like a potential single, not least next release 'Bulletproof' which took on something of a disco punk identity, quite appropriate for the 80s disciples down the front.
Considering the debut album is over a month away, the crowd didn't stop dancing, proving that live at least, she's well on her way - what remains to be seen is whether Ms Jackson can ride this wave of hype and come out unscathed the other side. On this showing, she'll have no problems at all...
