Elbow claim victory at this year's Mercurys
Sep 10, 2008
Last night at the Grosvenor House Hotel saw Elbow take the prestigious Mercury Music Prize ahead of early favourites Burial, The Last Shadow Puppets and Radiohead, with their album, The Seldom Seen Kid. Despite bookies taking a large amount of money on the band over the last few days, the result can be considered something of a surprise seeing as The Klaxons and Arctic Monkeys have won the last two years, meaning many expected the prize to go to a lesser known artist.
Elbow singer, Guy Garvey said in his acceptance speech that the victory was 'the best thing that's ever happened to us', which considering the band's history consists of much critical acclaim but not many sales and being dropped by their label, isn't saying all that much. Garvey also dedicated the prize to a late friend of the band, Brian Glancy, who the album is named after. The winners were awarded a cheque for £20,000.
