Thursday's news
Nov 25, 2009
Hello, and welcome to Thursday's News Felch. First up, we're a little surprised to see that Speech Debelle has left her record labell Big Dada. More surprising still is that it all seems to be a little acrimonious. Debelle seems peeved that the label weren't able to capitalise on her Speech Therapy LP winning the Mercury Music Prize, telling BBC 6 Music that:
"The Mercury Prize was on a Tuesday, and the Friday there were no more physical albums in the shops. So on the Mercury weekend, which would have been my biggest-selling weekend, people couldn't get it."
She added: "I wasn't disappointed that it didn't sell well, I was disappointed in the people I was working with.
"I wasn't on a big label and the machine wasn't there. So, even though the album won the Mercury, it was still only able to do what the label was capable of doing, which just means that I'm more prepared for next time."
All seems a little unfair on Big Dada to be honest (the label that brought the world Roots Manuva, Ty and MF Doom's King Geedorah alias), as they have always seemed like exactly the kind of label that any artist would want to work with. Mind you, Speech Debelle is one cockily ambitious sod. Take what she said about her soon to be recorded second album for example:
"I want it to be a mix of Ray Charles, a song like 'Georgia On My Mind'," she said. "I want it to have the atmosphere of Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon and the drums of J Dilla."
Will she succeed? Will she balls. It will be entertaining to find out though..
Next, is the news that our respected friends over at NME have decided on their Top 20 tracks of the decade. In a double header of surprise, they've picked something that wasn't made by skinny besuited young men, and something worthy of the accolade. Yep, they've gone with Beyonce's brilliant 2003 single 'Crazy in Love'. Though, given past form, they probably just chose something that they knew would annoy much of their readership in order to make themselves look edgy to cooler people such as us. The top 20 is as follows:
- Beyonce - 'Crazy In Love'
- MGMT - 'Time To Pretend'
- The Strokes - 'Hard To Explain'
- MIA - 'Paper Planes'
- OutKast - 'Hey Ya!'
- The Rapture - 'House Of Jealous Lovers'
- Klaxons - 'Golden Skans'
- Blur - 'Out Of Time'
- Arcade Fire - 'Rebellion (Lies)'
- Arctic Monkeys - 'A Certain Romance'
- The Libertines - 'Can’t Stand Me Now'
- The Streets - 'Dry Your Eyes'
- The Walkmen - 'The Rat'
- The White Stripes - 'Seven Nation Army'
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'Bang'
- Rihanna - 'Umbrella'
- Yeah Yeah Yeahs - 'Maps'
- OutKast - 'Ms Jackson'
- Radiohead - 'Reckoner'
- Hot Chip - 'Over And Over'
The Beyonce/Jay Z axis of world domination is typically busy, as the latter has been confirmed to perform at next year's Brit Awards, with Beyonce herself or epic mingebag that is Chris Martin among the rumours to join him.
Next up, good news for those of us that were blown away recently by Spiritualized's Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space gigs. Jason Pierce, in an uncharacteristically workaholic mood, has announced that he is currently in the studio recording a follow up to last year's brilliant Songs in A&E. I've just realised, you thought that was going to be an announcement that the Ladies and Gentlemen gigs were to be released on Blu Ray or something, didn't you? Unlucky.
Finally, Eminem has a treat in store for those that like really, really shit rap music. Thankfully, for those that don't, he's postponed the release of his proposed Relapse II album. Long term though, this is bad news, for it is to make way for Relapse Refill, which contains last year's crap fest that was the Relapse LP, with seven added heaps of crap. Not that Eminem sees it quite like that:
"I want to deliver more material for the fans this year like I originally planned", Eminem said in a statement. "Hopefully these tracks on The Refill will tide the fans over until we put out Relapse 2 next year". Eminem has been busy in the studio ever since Relapse was released, apparently. "I got back in with Dre and then a few more producers, including Just Blaze, and went in a completely different direction which made me start from scratch. The new tracks started to sound very different than the tracks I originally intended to be on Relapse 2, but I still want the other stuff to be heard."
Any vague prick of interest that may come from the always welcome news that Just Blaze has some new beats is more than tempered by the news that one of the new tracks features Eminem in collaboration with Kanye West and Lil Wayne. I always thought that if I had a time machine and was able to go back to one event in history, it would either be a momentous event from childhood, or an event of cultural and historical significance. I now think that I would go to the studio on the day those three recorded it and set fire to it.
Anyway, that's all we have for now. Flashlight News..because fact into doubt won't go..
