Radiohead make new track available for download

Aug 5, 2009

Radiohead have made a new track available for download on their site today (5th August). The song, 'Harry Patch (In Memory Of)' is a tribute to the last surviving World War 1 veteran, Harry Patch, who died on June 25th this year. Patch had given a memorable interview to the Today Program on BBC Radio 4 in 2005 and it was this interview that Thom Yorke gave as the insiration for the track.

On the band's official website, Yorke wrote "Recently the last remaining UK veteran of the 1st world war Harry Patch died at the age of 111. I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago on the Today program on Radio4. The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me. It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death. It was done live in an abbey. The strings were arranged by Jonny. I very much hope the song does justice to his memory as the last survivor. It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us. I hope we do not forget. As Harry himself said "Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims"."

You can listen to the track on the BBC Website and download it from the band's official site - which we strongly recommend as all proceeds go to the British Legion. So do a good thing today....

Just for the record, I think it's quite reminiscent of 'Broken Heart' by Spiritualized...

I didn't know anything about this, but was driving to work listening to Radio 4 as usual and wondering if I'd hit a button and put on Radio 3? It went very well with my lack of sleep and the dark rainy world I was in. Yorke is still a bit whiney and it is just him and the ex-guitarist now composer J Greenwood behind the strings. It reminded me of my fave Radiohead song, 'How to...Completely' I guess Broken Heart is obvious - though Yorke's vocals are much closer to Mark Hollis or Robert Wyatt. You can't disagree with the influence celebrated in the song or the laudable charity donation to the British Legion. Many former soldiers are destroyed by the institution, let alone the wars. Sad that people ignored this man and cunts like Tony Blair and Dubya sent people to kill and be killed...the war to end all wars? The point 2 -3 mins where the strings come in are wild. Like the fact this, Seven Worlds Collide (inc Radiohead members), and th
