ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space

Spiritualized to play classic album in its entirety

Mar 16, 2009

Ah, we love a bit of nostalgia here at Flashlight. A couple of years ago we decamped to the Kentish Town Forum on the hottest day since that time it was just a bit hotter to see Teenage Fanclub perform Bandwagonesque in its entirety as part of the Don't Look Back concerts. We all nearly died of dehydration, we knew deep down that it was a bit sad to go and see a band that ready to admit their best days are behind them, but a bloody good time was had by all. We are, therefore, chuffed to buggery to see that Spiritualized's 1997 opus Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space is to be performed in full at the Royal Festival Hall in October as part of this year's Don't Look Back. Oh, and a new version of the album is to be released in the same month to celebrate its, er, 12th anniversary. It's going to contain new content and new packaging: as if the pillbox edition wasn't extravagant enough in the first place.

Having had the privilege to see the band perform on their 1997 tour, we can say with some certainty that it is going to be absolutely ace, and will probably contain twelve of the biggest orchestras ever seen. Besides, their last album was excellent in parts, so it doesn't seem like such hollow nostalgia to revisit a past classic. We almost don't want to tell you about this in case you get tickets and we don't, but they go on sale this Thursday. See below for evidence of how much this is likely to rule.

The last album was pretty splendid and quite overlooked; as was Pierce's work on the soundtrack to Mister Lonely with Sun City Girls. It would be nice if they did Ladies & Gents, then a 2nd half including Let It Flow, Walkin' with Jesus, Run, Medication, She Kissed Me..., Death Take Your Fiddle, Stop Your Crying, Born Never Asked, Anyway That You Want Me & Smiles... Though sadly I didn't attend his old Spacemen 3 mucker's Sonic Boom's gig in a pub in Brum recently...Spectrum were apparently great and played many S-3 songs (Transparent Radiation, When Tomorrow Hits, Revolution etc), a Red Krayola cover and Spiritualized's I Want You (which SB says he co-wrote). How about a Spacemen 3 reunion set around The Perfect Prescription?

I remember seeing them do this at the Albert Hall. Was truly one of the most memorable gigs I've ever been to....
