Stone Roses box sets confirmed

May 12, 2009

The details of the eagerly awaited (by us at least) 20th anniversary remaster of The Stone Roses have been confirmed, and in a shocking state of affairs in this box set obsessed world, they look like they're going to be really, really expensive. There are three editions to be released; The Poor Version, The Middle Class Guilt Version, and The You're a Proper Stone Roses Fan edition. We jest. Sort of.

The 'cheapo' one is entitled Stone Roses: Special Edition, and includes the remastered LP (done by John Leckie and Ian Brown no less) plus an expanded booklet. Pffft..barely seems worth it. Next up the scale is Stone Roses: Legacy Edition, which features an extra CD called The Lost Demos, including a previously unreleased tune called 'Pearl Bastard'. Oh, and the brilliant DVD of their seminal Blackpool gig.

Finally, the one that all of us (with more money than sense...or more credit cards than money or sense) want is Stone Roses: Collector's Edition. This includes all the gubbins mentioned previously, plus a vinyl copy of the album, some pretty fly sounding gold foil embossed hardback slipcase, all the b-sides from the LP's singles, plus the frankly genius sounding lemon-shaped USB stick, which contains lots of stuff. You also get a 48 page book, which for some frankly fucking ludicrous reason includes Mark Ronson's views on the album. Frankly, that's probably a wise move, as I would previously have been tempted to splash the 100 quid plus for this. Now, however, in order to maintain my vow never to have anything to do with the trumpet covered twat that isn't a voodoo doll, I will have to get the middle version instead. Though if Silvertone/Legacy want to send us the posh copy with the Ronson opinions scored out in advance of the August 11 release date, we will grudgingly accept it.

£100. Blimey. This must be Ian 'Man of the People' Brown keeping it real for the masses. Deary me. This is the new ploy by the music industry to get their profits up- how many more remixed albums can we expect? A lot. Probably.

Makes me feel old to see this getting an anniversary re-release. Got all their stuff from the first album (when they still quite good) on vinyl.

I didn't know about Mark Ronson's contribution, and yes I'd agree that's a very good reason to steer clear of the otherwise only slightly ludicrous £100 box..!

What a fucking joke - can Silvertone milk this band any more? And how many new tracks can they possibly find? I'll be buying it (probably the Legacy one) but I'll be doing so with an angry look on my face. There's no doubt that the album can benefit from a clean up, but a £100 version? Lemon shaped UB stick? The world's gone mad...
