The first release on The Gull's Trunk Records, the You don't know what Broccoli is? EP is a distinctly unholy alliance between Manchester MC Chopps Derby and producer Mofo Snott.
How to describe this? Well, Chopps Derby's vocals are certainly unique. At times it sounds like Mofo Snott has taken a Dictaphone into a Salford pub, left it under Mark E Smith's table, asked him what gets on his tits and just sat back and watch him go. This can only be a good thing. It's certainly not a flow in the traditional sense (more an old man rant), but it works perfectly over Mofo Snott's infectious indie hip hop beats, which have a sense of playfulness akin to Prince Paul. The overall effect is that of a North West Pitman; moody, miserable, wilfully offensive and absolutely hilarious, as well as containing some deceptively banging beats. And you certainly have to say that anyone with the prowess to compare the smell of scampi that you get at the dog track to 'fanny blood' over a 1970s kid's show loop has a bright future. Though possibly not at children's parties.
