Hip hop is undoubtedly in a strange place right now. Previously a constantly evolving, innovative genre that reinvented itself every few years, mainstream rap has stagnated in recent times, with beats and flows eschewed in favour of clothing lines and vodka. It's no coincidence, therefore, that new acts like Chicago's Cool Kids find themselves looking back in time for inspiration. And not just musically, for new single 'Black Mags' fuses dirty analogue basslines with that most topical of subjects, the BMX. It's not actually as good as a lot of the press seem to be saying, but next to Fiddy and the rest , this unashamedly retro track sounds bizarrely fresh.
