Dinosaur Jr - I Want You to Know

Good old Dinosaur Jr. Always an enigmatic, slightly confusing band. They made a string of influential, downright brilliant albums in the mid to late 1980s, based on the staple element of heavily distorted riffs, melodic yet slightly slack guitar solos, and melodic yet extremely slack vocals coutesy of J Mascis. Yet live, they were responsible for the single suckiest gig that Flashlight has ever attended that wasn't Morcheeba...two hours of feedback, no discernible tunes...truly awful. It's good to know that the reformed Dinosaur Jr have lost none of that ability to perplex, for 'I Want You to Know', the first taster from their upcoming fifth LP Farm, is a strange beast indeed. It retains all the trademark alternative American rockisms that people have come to expect, yet is strangely reminiscent of 'Chelsea Girl'-era Ride covering Telling Stories-era Charlatans. They've still got it.

Hmm, I agree that the post Barlow material has more highlights. I still liked the "reunion" shows though when they played the early stuff. My mate who came with me was ill that evening and he hated it, poor lad.

I have seen them live several times in two different incarnations. A band that have always benefitted from a short-festival type set IMO. I'm a fan of Lou Barlow/Sebadoh/Folk Implosion and that trio of classic 80's Dinosaur Jr albums. But their comeback tour in Brum several years ago was really very boring, especially as they focused on the early/metal stuff and saved "the hits" for the end. However, a few months later at Thurston Moore's ATP fest in Minhead they played a shorter set and had put some post-Barlow material (The Wagon, Out There) into the set. Great stuff...am not sure if I can be arsed to drag my carcass to Bristol to watch them in a few weeks time..

Can you not read, tk? It quite clearly says 1980s.. Two of flashlight saw them some point in the mid 1990s, and they were truly awful. I'd love to see them again now though...

Ok third comment coming right up. You say they sucked live. Which show was it? When I've seen them they have been slack, but kind of endearing and always loud.

By the way you've said "string of late albums in the mid to late albums". Might want to get that edited. And this comment, but otherwise a nice post.

Lou Barlow looks exactly the same in every single photograph of him ever. He does not get older. He was born that age. J Masic, on the other hand...
