Tracks - 8th February

Anyone logging on hoping to read about this week's latest singles from myriad be-cardiganed (yes, it is a word. I think..), fey indie boys is, I'm afraid, shit out of luck. Yep, Tracks has gone fully dope. Indie is dead. Until we hear something, probably in the next couple of days, that we like. But for now, burn your guitars and that.

In the spirit of the week, let's begin, as all things should, with some Dutch drum'n'bass. You heard. In fairness, though featuring some suitably intense breaks, Noisa's 'Machine Gun' has more than a dash of funk to it, even sounding at times like a (far, far) heavier Justice. It's all enough to make Noisa our favourite Dutch people that aren't Dirk Kuyt for this week. Nice trippy video, too. It's like Peter Gabriel's 'Sledgehammer' on (more) acid..

Next up is Kyle Hall. Hall is a quite stupidly talented 18 year old from Detroit. Being an 18 year old kid from Detroit, you pretty much face three musical choices: Motown, The White Stripes, or house/techno. Admittedly you can still listen to music made outside of Detroit in Detroit, but you get the picture. In keeping with this week's flavour, Hall is firmly in the latter camp, and his 'Kaychink' single is an absolute gem; its classic treated Detroit strings and shuffling beats which will sound familiar - if you squint a bit - to all those familiar with late 80s English takes on the Detroit sound from the likes of A Guy Called Gerald, 808 State and LFO. It's out on March 15th, and comes highly recommended. Though unfortunately we don't have a youtube clip. You'll just have to take our word for it, or watch this random clip we found from a previous EP..

As you may have noticed, we like J Dilla round these parts. A lot. As do those good folks at The Doctor's Orders, who regularly put on absolutely top J Dilla Changed My Life nights in London. In honour of their first such gig to be held in Brighton - on Saturday 20th February at Jam (it's in The Lanes – go here for tickets; it's only a fiver, will be an ace night, and all proceeds go to The J Dilla Foundation and Lupus UK) - oh, and, just because you can never hear it too often - here's 'The Red' from Champion Sounds, Dilla's collaboration with other Flashlight fave Madlib..

From one sadly departed hero to one of hip hop's true survivors. KRS One and Buckshot's Survival Skills album has been out for a few months now, but only this week have I heard the brilliant remix of 'Oh Really', featuring Talib Kweli and Geo from Blue Scholars. KRS is still strutting, has still got it, and is still capable of some stellar wordplay: "I'm naturally dope, like coke before crack." Indeed you are, KRS.

Finally, we mentioned Philly MC Freeway in last week's Tracks - his new LP, The Stimulus Package, will be reviewed tomorrow. Here's a pretty impressive sneak preview, the Raekwon featuring 'One Thing', in which Jake One manages to combine Primo, Pete Rock and Dilla trademarks into one beat. An impressive piece of work, we're sure you'll agree. Does the rest of the album match up to this? You'll just have to wait for our review, won't you? Though, it's fair to say, it does. D'oh.
