The last thing put out by Ghost was his Lingua Franca EP with the vocalist Devorah, and I wrote at that time that her vocals detracted from the quality of the beats. Well happily on his new EP, Ghost pushes his own work to the fore, which is all to the good because on this evidence he’s a hugely talented producer.
The opening track, 'Way U Feel', is built around a summery 60s guitar riff and laden with heavy drums to create a Shadow-esque start to what, it soon becomes clear, is an absolute gem of an EP. Next up is the fine 'Return Journey', but it’s on 'S'All Good', featuring the vocals of Detroit MC Finale, where things really start to hit the heights. A smooth vocal harmony is looped up with some synths to form a track that beautifully matches his buttery flow. Things then get even better with the subsequent 'Feel Pain'. The insistent rolling acoustic guitar loop backed with cymbal-heavy beats and subtle strings over the top, make this the very epitome of a 3am head-nodder. Late night hip hop supreme.
Things are then rounded off by Ghost’s remix of 'Elevate', featuring Jehst and DJ IQ. It’s all moody strings and slightly sinister piano loops under more synth effects that provide a surprisingly uplifting vibe as the track moves on; a bitter sweet end to a cracking EP. The full album is most definitely one to look out for if this EP is indicative of its quality. Superb.
