Mayer Hawthorne and the County - Maybe So, Maybe No

Stones Throw Records are well known for championing all things leftfield and genius-like in hip hop, as their CEO and all-round good guy (as far as the underground goes) Peanut Butter Wolf has put out stuff from the likes of J Dilla and Madlib that has quite literally changed the entire genre. However, what's not so well known is that the LA-based label's tastes extend into the realm of soul and electro-funk. In my review of my musical 2008, I mentioned the number of new, yet authentic-sounding soul tunes that were being released, and that trend has continued into this year. A case in point being Mayer Hawthorne and The County's sublime modern doo-wop tune 'Just Ain't Gonna Work Out', whose red, heart-shaped vinyl pressing almost immediately sold out (don't worry kids, this soul boy grabbed a slice).
However, surpassing even the brilliance of that tune is the forthcoming new track, 'Maybe So, Maybe No'. From the best intro I've heard in years to the horn track, backing vocal harmonies and three minute running time, this is quite simply genius and I defy anyone to not love it. Check it here and buy it soon.
