Tracks - 10th August
Aug 10, 2009
Welcome to another episode of the ever fascinating tracks section from Flashlight Music, where we look at new releases, random tracks and upcoming points of interest. Oh, and nick NME's top tracks of the week and generally realise that they're rubbish.
Probably the biggest tracks news of last week was Radiohead releasing their track 'Harry Patch (In Memory Of)' for download. We've already covered that here, but it remains a damn good cause, so if you missed it the first time, you can download it here and claim that as your charity work for the week. Plus, that pound you donate is probably tax deductible...
This week sees the release of the long awaited (by us anyway) remastered version of The Stone Roses. So that should make for an interesting column next week. In the meantime, let's remind ourselves of how funny Ian Brown's voice was at that legendary Blackpool Empress Ballroom gig...
New singles out today include Miike Snow's 'Animal' which is Swedish, poppy and sounds slightly Animal Collectivey...It's fine but somehow slightly underwhelming; Bloc Party's 'One More Time' which sounds like Bloc Party over a 90s happy house piano hook and then a 90s Chemical Brothers hook; and Calvin Harris's horrendously awful 'Ready For The Weekend'. Seriously, that last one is offensive...
More interesting is the upcoming release of Dan Sartain's 'Bohemian Grove / Atheist Funeral', produced by a certain Mr Jack White, as well as White's own solo track 'Fly Farm Blues'. Unfortunately, Sartain's track is unavailable on youtube (although you can hear Atheist Funeral here and ascertain that it's a nice sleazy piece of rockabilly. White's track is currently unavailable anywhere on the good ol' net, but I've ordered it, so I'll let you know how that goes...In the meantime here's a classic slice of Jack White for pure enjoyment purposes...
As far as other tracks to listen to this week, well our good friends over at another music site highly recommend the new Friendly Fires track, 'Kiss Of Life' which is OK but making me seriously wonder why everyone is feeling they have to embrace 'tribal riddims' right now. What's wrong with a good old fashioned drum kit? The video also makes me pine for the summer that we're never going to get...
Also, Lightspeed Champion has made the first track from his new album available as a free download. As someone who loved the first album, I can safely say that this sounds nothing like it. It's good though, taking on a very, very Prince vibe. Looking forward to this album a lot...You can download 'Heavy Purple' here...
As mentioned this very week in this article on Flashlight, supergroups are coming back in a big way and whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is certainly up for discussion. In what is bound to be a slightly more breezy outfit than the aforementioned Josh Homme / Dave Grohl project, Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis have joined forces with M Ward and My Morning Jacket's Jim James to create the fantastically monikered Monsters Of Folk. The result, as you can see below is pretty much what you'd expect from that combination....For the record, I think it's ace.
Finally, good on the NME for putting together a collection of Elliott Smith videos, in honour of what would have been his 40th birthday last week. In a totally unassociated, completely original idea, here are a few of his classics...
RIP Elliott...
