Tracks - 19th October

Oct 18, 2009

Yes, yes, we know, you were left shocked and angry by the lack of last week's tracks section. Well let me tell you, we were as disappointed as you were. So let's not play the blame game, let's have a look at the things you should be listening to this week...

Charlotte Gainsbourg, daughter of Serge and Jane Birkin, and scourge of mainstream film makers everywhere following performances in the likes of The Science of Sleep and Antichrist, is back with a new album. The new record, IRM (That's French for MRI, fact fans) is a collaboration with the eratic but often brilliant Beck, and judging by the first tasters, is going to be very good indeed...You can download the title track for free from Charlotte's Website and get a brief insight into the making of the album below...It'll be out at the beginning of next year.

The Silent Years release new album 'The Globe' today and are offering up a free download in the shape of 'Know Your Place'. Unfortunately it's not nearly as good or as brilliantly named as 'Taking Drugs At The Amusement Park' and is a little over angsty, but I'm almost sure it mentions Flashlight in one of its early lines, so it gets a pass from us. You can download the free track here, although obviously you will be required to provide your email address...

Beardy weirdo and sometime Natalie Portman botherer Devendra Banhart releases a new album next week, What Will We Be and the first track to eb taken from it is 'Baby'. Very pleasant, some nice ooh oohs and a typical sunny, laid back vibe make this completely the wrong song to be listening to as Winter slowly closes in around us. However, if you want to pretend you're somewhere in California, hanging out with hippies, then this may be the one for you...

Having been lucky enough to catch Richard Hawley's show last week at Shepherd's Bush Empire, I feel duty bound to stick a video from his new album up, so lo and behold, you can check that out below...However, we made it to the gig in time to check out that night's support band, Smoke Fairies, two girls from London who make rather pleasing folky music. Their new single 'Sunshine' is out to download today or on 7" next week, and they're playing at the Borderline tonight...Check out past single, 'Living With Ghosts' below.

A new Foo Fighters single is usually a cause for great excitement amongst many, but it's hard to see 'Wheels', the new offering taken from their Greatest Hits collection bringing on any kind of mass hysteria. It's nice enough, though fairly by numbers, and is probably most notable for sounding more like Tom Petty than the Foos. Anyway, the album will sell billions, so it's not like they need our help...

For me, any excuse is good enough to post some Leonard Cohen, especially in his 70s pomp. This week sees the release of his legendary 1970s Isle Of Wight performance. Check out the clip of him performing 'Suzanne' below...and marvel out how very cool he looks at the beginning...

This week saw the announcement of the curators for next year's ATP Festivals at Butlins, Minehead promising us some rather diverse line ups to be announced in the near future. First up are Pavement, a band that Flashlight are so happy about reforming that we were up at the crack of dawn to score tickets, something that we haven't indulged in in a very long time. Sadly, this left us unable to stretch to tickets for the following weekend which sees Matt Groening take the helm. Whatever happens, both weekends are likely to be fantastic.

Finally, as you can see by the review Flashlight were lucky enough to be at the Spiritualized gig at the RFH this week, so what better way to end than with a clip from the phenomenal show...
