Tracks - 21st September

Sep 21, 2009

It's been something of an eventful week for me this week. On Thursday I got into a vicious brawl with the corner of a metal filing cabinet. I'm not normally a violent bloke, but I was sure I heard it say something about my mum. Though it may have just needed some oil. Anyway, the filing cabinet won (though I got a few digs in, and what may, to the untrained ear, sounded like a distinctly girlish scream, was actually me telling the cabinet that this isn't over) and appears to have aggravated an 18 year old football injury, leaving me on crutches. The above is surely the most elaborate excuse yet for the Tracks section being a day late. I truly don't know how Harry Powell can hope to match that next week.

Anyway, we luckily seem to have come to the end of the industry wide summer shutdown, and so there are a few things to get through this week. First up are Wall Street Riots. The new single 'One More Ride' is pretty rudimentary 3 chord guitar pop, but the video, featuring a good deed giving assailant is ace. See below, and also download (for free) a L'Amour La Morgue remix here.

Next are Glasgow's The Cinematics with 'New Mexico'. It's a bit Pulp, a bit Smiths and a bit Suede. Their album Love and Terror is released next Monday. Below is a live version of the single.

The Leisure Society's 'Save it for someone that cares' is a lovely floaty bit of Beach Boys summery jangle, containing myriad flutes and shit. It turns out that lead man Nick Hemming was previously in She Talks to Angels with none other than Paddy Considine, and has provided music for the rather brilliant A Room for Romeo Brass and the mind bendingly brilliant Dead Man's Shoes. This allows us to justify showing you not only a rather natty live version of the band busking the single, but also the trailer for Considine's new project with Shane Meadows, Le Donk. It looks to be genius.

We've also heard what we consider to be one of the single least long awaited comeback singles of the year in Editors' 'Papillon'. In a massive break from every single other indie comeback of the last 18 months, it sounds like everything else they've ever done with a load of early 80s synths thrown at it to compensate for the lack of tune. We simply can't wait for the album. Sorry, that was a typo. We actually can. Take all the time in the world, lads.

One band we never ever expected to hear from ever again are Senser. In their, ahem, heyday, they sounded like Rage Against the Machine without any of the riffs, lyrics or delivery. The intervening years have seen them change their sound hugely. Though, by the sound of 'Resistance Now', they got bored of all that 'change' nonsense and reverted to sub-Rage nonsense.

Finally, I thought I'd just give a quick mention to Speech Debelle. I hadn't really paid much attention to her, Mercury win or not, until seeing her supporting the mighty Roots Manuva at the weekend. She really did rule; a more charismatic act it would be hard to find. See you next week, when Mr Powell will hopefully still have four functioning limbs.
