Tracks - 5th October
Oct 3, 2009
Not a huge amount out there this week I'm afraid. After snapping into action two weeks ago after it's eight month summer break, the music industry seems to be taking a well earned rest. We have, however, managed to find a few decent things to occupy several minutes of your time.
First up is Bad Lieutenant, the new project from New Order's Bernard Sumner. Sumner has one of those voices that is so distinctive that he could release a Welsh language dubstep album, and it would still sound just like New Order. This actually does sound like New Order at their most jangly though. It's actually pretty good, but I still miss that bass sound, mind..
Next is the always welcome return of DJ Shadow's favourite modern funk band Breakestra, with a taster from their forthcoming Dusk till Dawn LP. 'Joyful Noise' starts uncharacteristically darkly, before settling into fairly typical - and fairly brilliant - funk workout, full of shuffling breaks and quite supreme musicianship. They're touring soon, and I heartily recommend you check them out. Incidentally, this link is strangely followed by six or so minutes of silence. Don't ever say we never give you anything. We don't give you much, truth be told, but we have given you this.
The 'Birds of a Feather' remix, from Feist producer Moky proves to be something of an unexpected gem. A summery piece of soulful retro pop (think early Money Mark) is elevated to something altogether more special by a beautifully restrained verse from The Wu's Gza. Loving it..
Regular readers may be aware that we're not huge fans of the recent trend of indie bands short on ideas lobbing poorly conceived early 80s synths at everything in a bizarre attempt to be forward thinking. Well, if Japanese Lovers are anything to go by, the 80s are dead (finally), long live...the 90s. 'Dumb' sounds like a cross between Babes in Toyland, The Jesus Lizard, The Melvins and myriad other noiseniks. And not a fucking lamely realised 80s electro pastiche in sight.
Here is a preview of surely the most odd album of 2009; Bob Dylan's selection of yuletide covers. What with it being early October, I'm fairly loathe to put this up now, but it's too bizarre not to. Plus, it's released next week anyway. I quite like it actually..I think there may be something wrong with me. It's for charidee as well, so get on it kids..
.Finally, it would appear that Kraftwerk are rereleasing all their albums this month, so we'll leave you with a classic clip. We don't mind 80s electro that was actually made in the 1980s, you see..and yes, I realise this was made in the 1970s, but the point still stands, sort of..laters.
