Tracks - 8th March

Mar 8, 2010

Polly Mackey & The Pleasure Principle can kick us off - they've been asked to play at the SXSW delegate dinner this year and are understandably pretty happy about it. Keep an eye on this Liverpool / North Wales band as they sound pretty good and seeing as they're playing about 900 shows at SXSW, everyone will soon know who they are...Have a look at their Myspace

No matter what you think of Vampire Weekend, their new video is ace. Featuring appearances by Jake Gyllenhaal swigging scotch and RZA umpiring a tennis match, it's awesomely bizarre. Plus it apparently has a Jonas Brother in it, but due to not knowing what they look like, I can't confirm. Maybe he's the red-headed, tennis playing girl.

Personally I don't think that you see the words 'Canadian' and 'Supergroup' used together enough. I know that we're all waiting on that Celine Dion and Brian Adams match up, but in the meantime, The New Pornographers are there to fill the void. Featuring Neko Case and other members of the Canadian music glitterati, new single 'Your Hands' is strangely infectious, bringing to mind some kind of Polyphonic Spree and White Stripes hybrid...

Sometimes stuff arrives in your inbox that's so mental, you're obliged to include it...This week the accolade goes to No Bra, a spoken word 'brutal art-pop' act. No shit. I'm not sure if it's a 'her' or a 'them' but it's strange enough to warrant a listen. These New Puritans have done a mix of the new single 'Minger' which you'll have to search out, but you can experience No Bra on the mighty Myspace...

From one mad entry to another, April sees the return of Kelis, someone who seems to have been obscenely hit and miss over the last few years. Seems now she's having a crack at disco, and to steal someone's comment from Youtube, it's all rather Donna Summer...

Now, how about a band I know nothing about. Sun Dial, apparently are releasing a new album on April 26th. They have an ex-member of Chapterhouse amongst their ranks. They're 'cult / psychedelic stoner rockers'. I can't find anything from the new album but we'll be checking it out. In the meantime, here's a track from 1990.

Finally, most listened to track of the week this week is Breakbot's 'Baby I'm Yours'. It owes much to Midnight Star's 'Midas Touch', but it's pretty damn ace in its own right....
